Elephants are the largest land animal in the world.  There are three species of Elephants, African Savannah, African Bush and the Asian Elephant.  There are many differences in these Elephants including size and shape of the head, size and shape of the ears, tusks, body shape, colour, size of the trunk.  There are also seven different types of Elephants, the African Pygmy Elephant being the smallest in the world.  Elephants boast a large trunk used for many things such as greeting each other, and trumpeting warnings.  The trunk has 40,000 muscles in it.

Elephants are unfortunately well known to be on a huge decline due to the illegal Ivory trade, mainly being the male and female African Elephants, whereas the Asian Elephants are due to habitat loss and human conflict.

Chester Zoo is home to a herd of Asian Elephants.  We were in awe as they left their enclosure to greet everyone and have something to eat.
